High School Art Show

The first annual Emerging Artist Exhibition was a great success.  This past year, the high school show was reorganized in an effort to recognize students who may have only taken one art class, or are just beginning to explore the arts in high school.  The exhibition was hung at STRS in the middle of September and was on display until the take down reception on October 12th, 2013.  We had about 130 amazing works of art! We were honored to have the teacher of the year, Sara Green speak that morning. Students were recognized with a certificate, a sketchbook from Dick Blick, and a pass to the Columbus Museum of Art.

Best of show in 5 different media were chosen:

  • Photography: Samantha Isley  ‘Emerging’ Photography
  • Drawing: Liz Courtney  ‘I Imagine’ Ink
  • Mixed Media: Megan Grote  ‘Spring’ Scratchboard/Colored Ink
  • Sculpture: Emily Sidle  ‘Hardball’ Nickel Brass & Copper
  • Painting: Noah Katrinchak  ‘Sleepy Baby’ Acrylic

The Ohio Art Education Association (OAEA) is pleased to announce the 2nd year for our new and improved high school art show!  “Emerging Artists,” will continue to be dedicated to showcasing artistic efforts, perhaps from students who have taken only one art class that may need an extra boost in their confidence.  We hope to recognize budding talent and provide a professional forum for young people to experience competition, something they will encounter in their college applications, portfolio reviews and future art careers in college.

The exhibition is open to any Ohio High School student whose art teacher is a member of the OAEA.  Each member may submit a photograph of up to five works of art digitally in the Spring.  Once the work is selected, the art teacher will be notified by email.  At that time, selected art work will need to be matted and submitted to their regional director in late summer so that it may be delivered at the September OAEA board meeting.

The Emerging Artist show will be on display through mid-September and early October in the 2nd floor lobby of the State Teachers Retirement Building in Columbus.  At the reception, various awards and prizes will be given to selected students with art in the exhibition.  Students may celebrate their work with their families and claim their pieces at the closing reception on Saturday, October 11th, 2014.

Deadline for online submissions is May 9th!
