Criteria

DISTINGUISHED EDUCATOR FOR ART EDUCATION:

This should be an individual in Education (NOT Art Education) who has contributed to Art Education (such as a superintendent, principal, teacher of another subject).

DISTINGUISHED CITIZEN FOR ART EDUCATION:

This should be an individual outside of the fields of education and visual art who has contributed to Art Education in some special way.

DISTINGUISHED BUSINESS OR ORGANIZATION FOR ART EDUCATION:

This should be a profit or non-profit organization, regardless of size, which has supported Art.

Procedure

Nominate prior to or at Conference Regional Meeting. Regional Director and Regional Officers may take the nominations. A Regional Awards Coordinator or nominating committee may be appointed by the RD or members can respond to a call for nominations in the Regional newsletter or by e-mail to members.

If only one person is submitted and less than 50% of the members deem the nomination appropriate, the nominee should be dropped. The Regional Director will provide all award nomination information (including the contact information for nominee and the nominator) on the Service Award Nomination Form to the 1st Vice President and Awards Chairperson at the RD meeting at the Annual Conference.

It is the responsibility of the Regional Director to oversee the distribution of the proper awards forms to the nominator.

It is the responsibility of the nominator to complete and return all forms and paperwork to the Regional Director (or Regional Awards Coordinator) by January 31. The Regional Director will check over the forms, make backup copies, and submit the originals to the OAEA Awards Chairperson by February 14.

FAILURE TO MEET THIS DEADLINE WILL RESULT IN THE REGION’S LOSS OF SAID NOMINATION

OAT (Outstanding Art Teacher)

Criteria

  • Be a member in good standing of the OAEA and must agree to be present at the annual convention to receive the award.
  • Have a commitment and dedication to his or her students that is characterized patience, understanding, compassion and helpfulness.
  • Meet the needs and interests of students in a creative manner, bringing about learning, growth and development in all areas, development of appropriate objectives.
  • Have developed a philosophy and theory of art teaching that is consistently reflected both in and outside the classroom.
  • Be aware and cognizant of the literature, research and current issues in the field of art education.
  • Contribute personal effort and time beyond the normal teaching duties in promoting art education and the arts in his or her school system, the community, the region and/or the state.
  • Be outstanding in public relations and in advocating support for art education and the arts.
  • Be involved in developing innovative curricula and methodology.
  • Show educational leadership at the local, regional, state or national level.
  • Be professionally active by publishing articles concerning art education, giving speeches in support of art education and/or the arts, and/or continue to create art and exhibit their own artwork.
  • Have completed at least five years of experience within art education.

Criteria

Nominee for a divisional award must:

  • Be a member in good standing and an active participant in OAEA. Should be present at the annual convention to receive the award.
  • Be active in the field of art education for a minimum of 5 years.
  • Be active in OAEA within that division for a minimum of 3 years, spending at least 51% of their workday within the division for which they have been nominated.
  • Meet the needs and interests of students in a positive and/or creative manner, bringing about learning, growth and development in all areas, and the development of appropriate objectives.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of current literature, research, and approaches in art education.
  • Be involved in innovative curricula and methodology.
  • Show educational leadership at the local, regional, state, or national level
  • Have developed a philosophy and theory of art teaching that is consistently reflected both in and outside the classroom, i.e. supporting local cultural events, making presentations at OAEA and/or NAEA.
  • Show strong evidence of being professionally active, which may include publishing articles, and/or advocating for art education, and/or creating art, and/ or exhibiting art work.
  • Consider becoming a member of NAEA upon receiving the divisional award, in order to be eligible for NAEA Division Award.

Art Educator of the Year

Criteria

The OAEA Art Educator of the Year award is a lifetime achievement award to be presented to art educators who have often already received previous OAEA awards within their region and / or division. These individuals have exhibited dedication and commitment to OAEA and art education over an extended period of years. It is the highest award the Ohio Art Education Association has to offer.

Nominee for the OAEA Art Educator of the Year Award must:

  • Have served at least 10 years within the field of art education.
  • Be a member in good standing of OAEA for a minimum of seven (7) years as of Dec.1st.
  • Have developed a philosophy and theory of art teaching that is consistently reflected both in and outside the classroom.
  • Be actively engaged in the field of art education through research, development of literature in the field, and exploration of current issues.
  • Be a leader in developing innovative curricula and methodology.
  • Show leadership at the state or national level. Nominee shall be active in state and/or national activities. State does not relate to local/regional affiliations. National activities shall include, but not be limited to state and national affiliation and beyond.
  • Show commitment and dedication to the field through understanding, compassion, and helpfulness to students and colleagues.
  • Be professionally active by publishing articles concerning art education, giving speeches in support of art education and/or the arts, and/or continue to create art and exhibit their own artwork.
  • Be willing to become a member of NAEA upon receiving OAEA Art Educator of the Year Award.
  • Agree to be present at the annual convention to receive the award.

Selection Procedure

  • Nominations for Ohio Art Educator of the Year may begin in the ARTline editions for summer and fall. All nomination forms must be received by the OAEA Awards Chair by the final date of the Fall OAEA conference (or postmarked by that date).
  • All nomination forms must include nominee’s full address and telephone number. The Awards Chairperson will issue by mail the Standardized Vita Form and Nomination Materials Request Form to the nominee by December 1st.
  • All information must be submitted back to the Regional Director by January 31 who will then pass it to the Awards Chairperson by February 14.
  • A committee appointed by the Awards Chairperson will review the nominations and the criteria to determine the finalists.
  • Finalists will appear in the OAEA ARTLINE for membership vote in April/May.
  • Recipient of the Award will be announced at the Fall Convention and in the ARTLINE.
